25th Oct 11.30-16:00
A relatively mild day with a light SSE. Still at least 2 1w Scaup and 3 Little Gull just off KP late morning, 9 Golden Plover over and single Dunlin on Tree Island. 3 Crossbill flew south over 1st field early aft and a small passage of Skylark. The west end of Mere produced a drake Scaup, 6 Pintail,1 Whooper Swan and an increase of Goldeneye. The Barney flock still favouring the field just south of Heslop’s reedbed. Late afternoon and a Water Rail was showing well in the reed edge off 1st field.
26th Oct 08:00-12:30
A fresh (fuckin freezing) SW and misty early on warming up by mid morning leaving clear blue sky. A fem Scaup off KP was probably a new bird in early morning before it snook off with 12 Pochard. Grey Wag around the jetties and still 1 Little Gull lingering. The southside produced a small but steady passage of Skylark south, and also a steady passage of Starlings (300+) south and west over Mere. Snipe along 2nd field shore, and single Chiff Chaff in the willows there. 40+ Goldeneye dropped in from the north late morning.
Late afternoon 6 Whooper Swan dropped on Mere, Black necked Grebe off 2nd field, Kingfisher and Golden plover. The highlight however was the Starling roost around Heslop’s which held at least 5000 birds.
